Friends of Danada is a volunteer group that assists and supports the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County with projects and programs at Danada Forest Preserve located between Naperville and Wheaton, Illinois. In the late 1970s, a citizens organization, Save the Rice Farm Group, encouraged the Forest Preserve District to purchase the farmland of the late Dan and Ada Rice.
The Forest Preserve District acquired 780 acres of the property in 1980 and requested the Save the Rice Farm Group (which was sponsored by the Forest Foundation at that time) to stay on as volunteers. Many of the nearly 200 volunteers donated a lot of time and labor at Danada Forest Preserve, helping to restore the deteriorating mansion, stables, paddocks and landscaping. The group broke away from the Forest Foundation (according to an established policy) and incorporated as Friends of Danada in 1986. Today we have a thirteen-member Board of Trustees, a full time salaried executive director, three part-time support staff, about 50 volunteers and nearly 300 names on our mailing list, many of whom are dedicated helpers at special events.
